 Liner Notes from The Chancellor:

When I was a boy, I liked the things that made me cry with joy.  Ideas of innocence, family and the wanting, the hunger for love.  And to me, music and lyrics reached those concepts like no other form of communication.

And though I've always liked all sorts of music, I love music with heart.  So much so that, from the first moment I sang into a tape recorder as a kid, all I've ever really wanted to do is make my heart into music.

I understand that music can be fun.  And when people say they love music, they often mean as a background soundtrack for hedonism.  I get that, and I'm not trying to be aloof or condescending in any way.  But I love music for how it can transcend misunderstanding, loss and sadness, and reach inside us all, making us feel less alone and more understood.

That's what reading Dostoevsky in college did for me, and what hearing The Smiths for the first time accomplished too.  Unexpectedly, from out of the shadows, I was comforted by a new best friend.  I was suddenly more alive and human, connected and in communion with others.  The deep or nutty thoughts in my head were apparently in someone else's too, someone timeless.  And so I was going to be OK.

The timeless language of human connection and communion -- that's music to me.  A soul singing, "It's OK.  Go on dreaming.  Because we live forever."
